I recently downloaded an app for my iPhone. It is called Fooducate. It allows you to scan the bar code on foods, rates the foods and than tells you better, healthier options! It is very accurate and lets you know other brands that may be healthier then the one you are choosing. I’m a big fan. Now only if I remember to use it…hmmm.
I usually choose not to blog about political issues; however, this one just seems so relevant today. One of my good friends is in Grad School and was given the assignment of watching Michael Moore’s documentary, “Sicko”. She insisted I borrow it, so I watched it last week. It really makes you realize how the United State’s healthcare compares to that of any other country, and I mean any, even third world countries. For those skeptics out there, just give it a try, especially considering today marks the day that some health care rules will go into effect. I know many of my friends have not had problems with health care because we all have insurance, but this film really makes you think about what life would be like if you didn’t have a job or were able to pay for insurance on your own. Like I said, I’m not preaching, just wanted to share a unique perspective on our health care system and shed some light on what our government is currently trying to do.
It is always fun to find a new heath related website. At this point in my life I have the workout thing down, but the food things is another issue. I definitely underestimate what I eat in a day. Spark People has been my saving grace. Check out www.sparkpeople.com, sign up for free and start your account. You can track your workouts and your daily food intake. It was a great reality check for me. I actually started using the site a few years ago, but started up again this summer. Try it out, and if you have an iPhone, you can download the app and input information throughout and keep better track fo the calories.
I am so excited spring is here! The only bad thing about spring is being allergic to grass. Every April and May, like so many others, I get the sinus headaches, itchy eyes, and runny nose. This year, however, I found a quick fix which has become my new allergy savior – the Neti Pot! It is a small tea-pot that you fill with water then put a small pack of saline which flushes out the nasal cavities of bacteria and all the nastiness up there. This week I started feeling the effects of my allergies on Monday and of course I had to fly out on Wednesday for work, so I immediately used the Neti Pot twice a day on Monday and Tuesday. By Wednesday, I was ready to fly! I’m not saying this replaces your regular doctor visit or allergy medication, but it is a nice alternative and organic!
My aunt is a little obsessed with QVC, and when I say a little, I mean a lot. Anyway, last Christmas, QVC featured the Clarisonic Skin Cleansing System, and my aunt purchased it for my cousin. I recently signed up for the Iron Girl Duathalon (2 mile run, 22 mile bike, and 2 mile run). I received a training schedule when I signed up, which included at least 2 days a week of strength training. It was time to bust out my Jackie Warner Workout DVDs again. You may recognize her from Bravo’s Work Out, which showcases her intense training routine and eventful personal life. And when I say intense, I mean intense. These are by far the best workout DVDs I have used! All you need are two sets of weights and a DVD player and you will have defined muscles in no time. I know, I sounds like an infomercial, but it is that good, and the time go by so fast. It is a nice change of pace from the gym or during those unexpected rainy days.
